Time for some Summer Sensations hopping

hosted by the wonderful Marian of

seams to be sew

Seriously, if you don’t already follow Marian you need to be if you like quilty things! She does lots of boms, qals, and quilty things in general. She’s also the one who organized The Road Home Row Along that I’m also participating in starting September 6th (psst – see, there’s a button for it over there on the right).

Anyhow, I don’t know about you but I’m not a summer time person. The heat really gets to me. So I signed up to participate in Marian’s Summer Sensations blog hop. 🙂 There’s 13 of us and each will have something summer sewing, quilting or crafting related to share with you. That way you’ll have plenty on your to-do list for those times when it’s just too darn hot to go outside or when you need to whip up something quick for a summertime event.

Not only that, but there’s also an awesome giveaway! Whoop-whoop! Each day of the hop, our wonderful sponsor

will be giving away a $25 gift certificate! YAY!!! So go show the other blogs some love and join the giveaway.

My First 2016 Q3 Finish! YAY!

Yesterday morning, hubby was running a bit late so I was attempting to help him gather all his gear and get out the door. I picked up the pouch his data collector (piece of land surveying equipment) and it almost fell out! Why? Weeelllllllllll… That’s my fault. *hanging my head in shame*

About a year ago – yep it’s been that long – he asked me to make him a new one. We sat down together with his current pouch and hashed out a rough idea for a new pouch. And… Then… I forgot all about it……

Until yesterday morning. I almost started crying I felt so guilty. He works so hard to provide for us while I stay home with our youngest and I completely forgot all about one of the few things he’s asked me to make or do for him. That lit a fire under my butt.

For the majority of the day yesterday I worked on it until it was finally finished! YAY!!!

This extremely thick Real Tree Camo canvas type fabric was killer on some needles! I’d love to know what it’s typically used for. I’ve never felt canvas this heavy at the fabric stores. I picked up this huge piece that’s about 1.5 yards wide x 3 yards long from a consignment store sale. It’s heavy! It claimed the lives of 3 of my sewing machine’s needles and 2 of my serger’s needles! YIKES!

With this project finished, I can now cross off #9 on my sewing list. This is my first 2016 FAL Q3 finish. *insert goofy grin here* 1 down, 65 left to go.

Wait! Whaaaa?!? 65?!? How did that happen? *sigh* Guess I better go get to sewing something else now.

Till next time happy sewing! 🙂

2016 Finish-A-Long 3Q Start

What’s this photo mash up about? See that little one right in the dead center? Whaaa? Can’t make it out good enough. Here ya go. This is my post for the:

If you don’t know what I’m talking about there’s numerous hosts for this large event. Basically we declare what projects we’re going to attempt to finish this quarter. The 3Q (short for the 3rd quarter) runs from 7/8 thru 10/6. And lemme tell ya… my list is LONG! lol First however, I’ll introduce you to the hosts:

One of the requirements for this is that it needs to be a tangible project with at least a pile of fabric and a pattern. Well, I’m not going to go that deep into my list… I would be here for days trying to list it all and I doubt anyone would want to read all of that! (or wait for all those images to load lol) Well… Lemme clarify that a bit. There ARE some here that are just a pile of fabrics and a pattern. However, those that do actually have a deadline. What I’ve not listed are piles of fabric with a pattern if there’s no personal deadline. Why not you ask? Well. Short answer – take a look at my list! LOL

I actually had a post mostly written for 2Q, but then life happened. Regardless, I’m in now so let’s get started!

I’m dividing up my projects by type so that’s why there’s multiple lists. Some things could easily fall under multiple project types, however, I’m putting them under the category that would take up the most time for me to do.

  • Quilty things:
    1. Vintage Truck Quilt
This will be a Christmas present for a family member made from a pattern I came up with. I’ve gotten most of the fabric for it cut already. Once I finish cutting, I’m going to chain piece the blocks together, fussy cut the trucks and applique them onto the blocks, sew up the top, quilt and bind it.
    2. Merry Christmas Mini Quilt QAL
This is a pattern I’ve been working on and am hoping to release it in early September for a QAL. Shhhhh! It’s a secret project for a smidge bit longer. If you’re interested, you can find more info under Upcoming QAL.
    3. Vintage Kitchen BOW
A pattern I’m designing for a BOW. The first block will be out July 20th so mark your calendars or go subscribe now so you’ll get email notifications. *hint hint wink wink* Once it’s finished, it will hang in my vintage themed kitchen.
    4. Disney Princess Mystery QAL
This will be a Christmas present for my youngest once it’s finished.
    5. Entry for The National Quilt Museum contest
I have my fabric and currently tweaking my pattern. Shhhh – it’s a secret sewing project.
    6. Illusions quilt
This will be a Christmas present for a family member. I have the pattern, 3 of the 4 fabrics that I’ve already started cutting, and still hunting for the last fabric.
    7. Combo crochet and quilted blanket
This will be a Christmas present for a family member. No pattern needed. 🙂 I have my fabric and yarn all ready to go as soon as I finish the FRAN mystery CAL.
    8. Eagle tabletopper
The pattern I designed and fabric is sitting here all together just waiting for me…
    9. Pixie Summer Home QAL – fall version
Fabrics are ready to go! Eagerly awaiting the QAL. I’m making this for me to use for a couch quilt.
    10. Pixie Summer Home QAL – Christmas/winter version
Fabrics are ready to go! Eagerly awaiting the QAL I’m making this for me to use for a couch quilt.
    11. Crossroads QAL
This will be a Christmas present for a family member. I’m doing relatively good at keeping up with this one as we are also following along with it in my local quilt guild.
    12. Repeat QAL
This will be a Christmas present for a friend. Fabrics are ready so are the paper pieced patterns, they’re just awaiting my time
    13. Summer Solstice QAL
This will be a Christmas present for a family member. Fabric is cut and I’m eagerly awaiting the next step in this QAL
    14. Thread Journey QAL
I think I will be keeping this one for myself as I’m tweaking the pattern a bit to what I like. Currently working on part 1 of this QAL
    15. Mini BOM 2016
Fabrics are ready and awaiting time to do part 1 of this.
    16. Matching set of: Table Runner
Christmas present for a family member. Fabrics and pattern are ready just waiting for me to have time. Shhhhhh! It’s a surprise.
    17. and 4 placemats
Christmas present for a family member. Fabrics and pattern are ready just waiting for me to have time. Shhhhh! It’s a surprise.
    18. Tribute to Perry, GA challenge quilt
There’s no fabric for this pile yet as I’m not sure what fabric I’m going to be using for it, if any with the exception of the batting, backing and binding. I’ve already started it, however, my start involves used, then dried, then emptied out tea bags. Yup, I’m getting all artsy on y’all. 😉
    19. QAL with the 12 Days of Christmas
    20. Bee Inspired QAL
I thing this is so cute! However, I’m changing it up a bit. Mine will have a mixture of black tonal and black/white background with the upcycled pink, purple and green skirts for the applique.
    21. Wallhanging Quilt
Another artsy idea I’ve had based on this image. It’s a secret sewing project because it’s getting entered places. Y’all can see it once I get it all done.
    22. Super Secret Surprise Quit
Why is it super secret? Well, because I hid the fabric so well that, well, ummmm, I wasn’t able to find it in time to photograph it for this post. LOL It’s going to be a present for a family member. I have the panel (chickens – her favorite), other fabrics, and pattern. I just, ummm, can’t find them. ROFL
    23. Spooky Delights QAL table runner
Well, I started this QAL with good intentions. Then I sewed up the borders wrong… After taking the time to rip out around 15 feet of stitching, I kinda lost interest for the moment. I would like to get this done as it’s the only thing I’ve cut into my precious (insert Lord of the Rings jokes here LOL) Ghastlies fabric for.
  • Sewing projects
All those things you see in the image – they are various pieces of clothing, fabric and linens that I plan on upcycling from what they are into dresses 1-14 for my little girl. If you’ll look closely, you’ll see that there is 4 items on each row. The left and right columns are going to be the bodices of the dresses and the inner rows will be the bottoms. For example the very top row: the hot pink ladies t-shirt will be turned into the bodice of a dress and the green and pink floral linens right next to it will be turned into the skirt part of the dress. The pink and white florals on the black background next to that will become the skirt of a dress made with the black cat head print to the right of it.

    1. Dress for little 1 thru 14
    2. Indian Summer dress for little
Pattern free from WIDI Creations here
    3. Dress for little from dad’s upcycled shirt – 3 of them
Directions found here for free on Craftsy from Ola Jane & Ola Jack Patterns
    4. Halloween Outift for my little
Using Simplicity pattern 1305 with some tweaks
    5. Halloween Outift for myself
This is a super-duper-secret sewing project. See that link in my sidebar? The one about the 2016 Refashioners? Yea, that’s where this is going to fit into. The theme this year is jeans.
    6. Christmas stocking for oldest daughter
Christmas present for oldest. Have pattern and fabric ready. It’s just waiting for my time and attention. Shhhhhh! It’s a surprise.
    7. Christmas stocking for granddaughter
Christmas present for granddaughter. Have pattern and fabric ready. Just waiting for my time and attention. Shhhhh! It’s a surprise.
    8. Christmas tree skirt for oldest daughter
Christmas present for oldest. Have pattern and fabric ready. Just waiting for my time and attention. Shhhhhhh! It’s a surprise.
    9. Carry bag for Hubby’s data collector – DONE You can read about it here
Self-drafted based on the dimensions of the data collector (a piece of equipment used in land surveying) and his requests
    10. Carry bag for Hubby’s iPad for work
Self-drafted based on the dimensions of the iPad and his requests
  • Crochet projects
    1. FRAN mystery CAL afgan
I’ve finished over 1/2 of this so far. I’m hoping to finish it and give it to hubby for his birthday on 7/28. Which ain’t gonna happen… 🙁 But I need to keep on it otherwise if I set it aside, it’ll be collecting dust years from now… Still unfinished. LOL
    2. Disney Princess / Villain CAL
Have yarn and eagerly awaiting this CAL
    3. Mermaid Tail blanket
Christmas present for youngest. Have yarn and pattern and waiting for me to finish (1) FRAN mystery CAL, (2) combo crochet & quilt blanket.
    4. Circle sweater
This will be one of those sweaters that start out as a mandala pattern, extended to be big enough to wear with skipped stitches for the arm holes, then sleeves made and attached. This will be for my little for the cool weather.
    5. Crochet Overcase Sweater
This will be for myself. I’ve not yet started it yet as I’m unsure about the pattern I’ve picked out. I’m debating between this one and two others. We’ll see. I have several other crochet projects to finish first.
    6. Crochet Shrug project
Christmas present for a family member. Have pattern and yarn. Waiting for me to finish (1) FRAN mystery CAL, (2) combo crochet & quilt blanket, & (3) Mermaid Tail blanket. This does not have to get finished by Christmas though as the person who I am planning on this for is also getting #22 in my quilty things list above.
  • Knitting Projects
    1. Learn to knit!!!
    2. Make hubby a pair of socks using this nice soft yarn and this needle. Seriously, look at how fuzzy and soft that yarn is! I just keep squishing it against my cheek. LOL I found a pattern using this weight yarn and it said to use this circular needle so that’s what I bought. I have NO clue how to knit… However, I’d love to learn, if only to knit hubby socks. Why? My hubby is a big man who wears a size 15.5 wide boots. Do you know what it’s like to find ANY socks that fit him in the rural area where we live? I don’t think he’s ever had a pair of nice soft socks. I’d love to make him a pair for Christmas.
  • Hand Embroidery
    1. Fall Love QAL
Have everything and my patterns are tweaked and almost ready to go. A pattern I’m designing for a BOW. The first block came out yesterday!
    2. Floral Fairies 2 mini quilt
My hand embroidery pattern I’m turning into a mini quilt.
    3. Floral Fairies 3 mini quilt
My hand embroidery pattern I’m turning into a mini quilt.
    4. Floral Fairies 4 mini quilt
My hand embroidery pattern I’m turning into a mini quilt.
    5. Floral Fairies 5 mini quilt
My hand embroidery pattern I’m turning into a mini quilt. (My pattern and floss for this one is included in the picture right below this one.
    6. Floral Fairies 6 mini quilt
My hand embroidery pattern I’m turning into a mini quilt.
  • Other
    1. Finish my class on Skillshare: Micro Batch Preserves Peach Jalapeno Sauce
    2. Finish my class on Skillshare: Fold Over Clutch
    3. Finish my class on Skillshare: Hand Embroidery Sampler
    4. Finish my class on Skillshare: Basic Quilting How To

Well, that’s everything I think! LOL It’s not everything I’m working on however. There’s numerous BOMs, CALs and other things that there’s no way I’ll be able to finish in 3Q because they’re not even over by then. So I’ll just save them till next time. Or the time after that. Or the one after that… lol

Till next time, have fun!

Color Play Friday 07/08/16

Thanks for visiting me for another Color Play Friday hosted by Lorinda from Laurel Poppy and Pine and Trina from In An Otter Life.

Just a general fyi before we get into the post – none of the links within this post are affiliate links and I have not be compensated in any way for them. The fabric links all go to Fat Quarter Shop and the links for the quilts go to their respective creator.

At first I went in search for a metallic for the black and grey because I had a general idea of what I was thinking with the colors I found within the image. Then I found  these! And they have each color in my palette! After I realized that they have fabrics that match my colors my mind went into overdrive.

Fabrics from my palette from top to bottom:
Artisan Spirit Shimmer Metallic Ebony Fresco
Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Metallic Charcoal Dunes
Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Metallic Sunglow Striations
Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Metallic Cloud Striations
Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Metallic Violet Striations
Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Metallic Lime Striations

My thinking was that these would make an amazing modern geometric quilt with lots of negative space done in the black! I envisioned a quilt pattern similar to these. Lots of negative space with room in between so that the colors really popped. I think any of these patterns would look wonderful in the fabrics above.

Quilts & Patterns info

Top Right: January Block by Lady Harvatine
Bottom Left: Minimal Triangles in Modern Patchworks Magazine Spring 2016 quilt by Suzi Williams
Bottom Right: Wavelength by Rebecca Bryan

Okey dokey, now onto my actual fabric choices for this week.

I absolutely adore that Butterfly fabric from Hoffman Fabrics! So much so I decided to make it the focal and the rest just tonals and my original idea went poof right out the window again! LOL Here’s the fabrics from top to bottom:
Crystalia Onyx Butterfly Echo
Grunge Basics Lead
Rainbow Batiks Sun Circles
Basic Mixologie Lagoon Biased
Indah Batiks Violet Dotted Square
Modern Batik Collection Leaf Raindrops

This week I’m playing along with:
Sarah from Sarah Goer Quilts
Lorinda from Laurel, Poppy and Pine

Color Play Friday 07/01/16

Thanks for visiting me for another Color Play Friday hosted by Lorinda from Laurel Poppy and Pine and Trina from In An Otter Life. The photo for this week is a thing of beauty! You see, I’m a gear-head chick. If I could have any car, regardless of the cost, it wouldn’t be some little, fast, foreign thing. Nope, not me! I’d have to admit, I’d be torn between a ’69 Chevelle SS or a ’71 RoadRunner. *insert big cheesy grin here* Once upon a time I actually restored a few oldies including a ’67 Impala (that has less than 50k original miles!) and a ’76 Grand Prix that has a 400, 2 – 4 barrel carbs, and slicks when I bought it. It was set up for the race track when I bought it. Ok, I’ve digress enough. Let’s get back to the photo and fabric.

At first I was imanging something, like a tote or large purse, in the off white color I found on the engine (it’s the background color that the hexie’s are on) with a few rows of hexies in the other colors that I picked out of the picture with large, hand quilting details on the hexies using the same color as the background.

Then, I started looking at fabric and came up with a totally different thought.

I envisioned something done using the center fabric as the focal and main print, with the surrounding fabrics for the details. If I were using these for a tote or large purse, I think I’d fussy cut a tree in a circle and then reverse applique it front and center. I know that there’s numerous “busy” prints in my choices for this week, but I really think they play well together. And I’m not sure why that brown starfish print is showing so dark. It looked closer to the tree trunk when I was playing around with them. Anywhooo, here’s the fabrics I picked this week:

Tapestry in Eternal Brio by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery – center fabric

Starting from 12:00 position and going clockwise:

Snofall in Petal Trail Marine by Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella

Bear Camp in Bear Bois Grass by Jay-Cyn Designs for Birch Organic Fabrics

Greenwich Chambray in Wineberry by Robert Kaufman

Bear Camp in Bear Flight Mineral by Jay-Cyn Designs for Birch Organic Fabrics

Yarn-Dyed Manchester in Red by Robert Kaufman

Foxtail Forest in Fern Bouquet Navy by Rae Ritchie for Dear Stella

Maritime in Sand Dollar Brown by Charley Harper for Birch Organic Fabrics

Color Play Friday 06/24/16

Today I’m joining in with Lorinda from Laurel Poppy and Pine and Trina from In An Otter Life for their Color Play Friday!

For a while now I’ve been watching what Lorinda comes up with Color Play Friday on her blog. After reading her post from last week, I decided to try it to see what I can come up with. As a gardener and outdoor lover, I absolutely love the image and everything it represents. However, it really doesn’t do much to inspire a palette when you first look at it. When I first looked at it, all I seen black, white, dark brown, and green. Then I plugged the selected image into the Pallette Builder over at Play Crafts and came up with some surprising options.

After playing around with the dots for a while, I came up with a palette I liked and could see myself actually using even though it’s not my typical color choices. Using this pallete I envision a modern style quilt with the background a gradient of the top 4 fabrics with pops of color throughout from the bottom 2 colors.

Color Play Friday 6/24/16

I took a screenshot of the image with my little dots still there so you can see that those are actually the colors I found within this image. Surprisingly, I only used the green from my initial thoughts.

The first fabric I found, was surprisingly, the yellow. After that one, the blues and neutral were easy. The green was the hard one as there’s not much that I found in that color and I didn’t want a solid (though there’s a Moda solid that is that exact color!). I was actually thinking of going back to the palette builder and switching that green but I kinda thought that would be cheating so I left it and went back to hunting. I’m happy with the one I picked because I believe it gives the palette a pop of color without overpowering the focal print.

The fabrics I found are: (in order from top to bottom)
Wildland Arrowheads in Dusk by Miriam Bos for Birch Organic Fabrics
Tapestry in Mudcloth Blue by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery
Noe in Poppin Sky by Erin McMorris for Free Spirit
Alpine in Birch White by Erin Michael for Moda Fabrics
Wildland Village Feast in Sun by miriam Bos for Birch Organic Fabrics
Honeycomb Dot in Grass Green by Kei
(Links all go to Fabricworm’s online fabric store. These are NOT affiliate links, nor have I been endorsed for this post in any way. This is just an online fabric store I like and chose to use to find my fabric for this Color Play Friday.)

If I ever get my hands on those fabrics and have them all in my stash at the same time I will make the quilt that I envisioned in my head. What about you? Would you use my palette or fabric choices?
